Introducing 'San Francisco Sideways' - Back story

I’ve always considered myself a ‘glass half full’ person – I look for the good, the random, the entertaining.

After 3 years of living as an ex-pat in Ukraine – even moving to one of the world’s finest cities (San Francisco) - I found myself a bit at a loss.   Suddenly the silver linings seemed harder to find.

In Chicago I had seen the brutal winters as ‘character building’ and what enabled the euphoria of summer.
In Kiev, I viewed bureaucracy and mountains of confusing paperwork as an entertaining throwback; their stern personalities as culturally entertaining.

Why was San Francisco feeling blank rather than an exciting blank slate?
I think it was some post ex-pat funk + how I turned my head.

By looking for the bright side, you see the bright side.

What’s ‘seeing sideways’?

It’s opening those side doors of places not yet traveled.
It’s looking for the novel, entertaining, surprising.
It’s intentionally finding the good side.

It’s not being blind to challenges, frustrations or exasperation – but it’s not letting those things blind.

Here’s to turning the view to see a totally different picture.
